The F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber of the third generation.
Developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the US Navy, it entered service with the Navy in 1961.
Until 1962, it had separate designations F4H and F-110 Spectre in the Navy and Air Force, respectively, which caused confusion and, in particular, led to the creation of the current system of aviation and missile designations, in which the aircraft received the familiar name F-4 Phantom II.
