The first Su-27PU (T10PU-5) was repaired and rebuilt to serve as a test aircraft for the Su-30MKK, the first flight in the new form took place on March 9, 1999. The first KnAAPO prototype ('501') flew on 19 May 1999 (sometimes reported as 20 February 1999), with the second ('502', in the basic Chinese camouflage scheme but designated simply as Su-30MK rather than MKK) following later in 1999. '501' and '502' represent the planned production configuration, with a tall, Su-35-style flat-topped tail, retractable in-flight refueling probes and (some say) Su-35-style fairings.
