The BTR-80 (initial series) is an 8x8 armored personnel carrier that entered service in 1986 and replaced the earlier BTR-70. In 1984, the Soviet Union began production of a variant of the BTR-70 with a diesel engine, which was called the BTR-80. The Soviets upgraded some BTR-70s with some of the improvements built into the BTR-80, including a high-angle turret. The double doors are designed to allow infantry to disembark while the vehicle is moving and to allow infantry to exit from one side if fire is being opened from the other.
