American three-axle ballast tractor, produced by Diamond T since 1941. The improved Diamond T 981 model featured a modified winch design. The 12-ton, three-axle 6x4 tractor was created in accordance with the requirements for tank transporters, which the British purchasing commission sent to several American firms in 1940. Diamond Truen of Chicago, which already had a prototype heavy truck designed for the US Army, made minor changes to it to meet British requirements, and soon received an initial order. Serial production of the 980 began in 1941.
