The Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198) is the first sports car from Mercedes-Benz in the post-war period. The car was introduced in 1954 as a two-seater closed sports car with expressive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. At one time it was the fastest production car.
Built by Daimler-Benz AG under the internal number W198, the fuel-injected road version was based (to some extent) on the slightly less powerful carbureted Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194) - a hugely successful 1952 sports car that was intended solely for racing.
