USS KITTY HAWK, the flagship of the Kitty Hawk-class multipurpose aircraft carrier, was laid down in December 1956 and built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. Launched on May 21, 1960 and commissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on April 29, 1961, KITTY HAWK was originally designated CVA-63 (Carrier, Attack Aircraft, No. 63), and in May 1975 was renamed CV- 63 (non-nuclear).
KITTY HAWK participated in campaigns ranging from Vietnam to the Persian Gulf Wars.
