M8A1 steel plates were a cover for airfields developed by the US engineering services. The plates were used, primarily, for the rapid construction of temporary runways. Such plates were used in the Vietnam War in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s, most often in army aviation (for basing helicopters, light attack aircraft and surveillance aircraft). They can be seen in many photographs of that time.
