The Mi-8MT entered serial production at the Kazan Helicopter Plant in 1977. Starting next year, it was equipped with modernized TV3-117MT Series III engines. Initially, the number of helicopters with TV3-117 engines was significantly less than the number of previous versions of the TV2-117, but military operations in Afghanistan forced the Soviet military to reconsider its ordering policy, and by the mid-1980s the Mi-8MT and its derivatives. By 2001, the Kazan plant produced more than 3,000 helicopters with TV3-117MT and TV3-117VM engines.
