Following the Korean War, and drawing on lessons learned from the conflict, the US Army established requirements for a new multi-purpose helicopter. Several companies undertook development, and Bell Helicopter ultimately won the competition with its design—the Model 204, which received the military designation XH-40. The prototype made its first flight on October 20, 1956. Subsequently, the production version entered service under the designation HU-1A and the official name "Iroquois." Due to the initial "HU-1" designation, the helicopter quickly acquired the informal nickname "Huey." In 1962, as part of a standardization of military designations, the name was changed to UH-1.
