I-16 (Russian: И-16), also commonly used names: "Ишак", "Ишачок"; "Rata"; "Mosca", among the Spanish Republicans; "Lastivka" in China. Soviet single-seat front-line fighter of the 1930s, single-engine monoplane, the first serial aircraft with retractable landing gear. Developed by Polikarpov Design Bureau. I-16 demonstrated its high combat qualities in local armed conflicts on the eve of and during World War II.
