In August 2024, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received its first F-16 multi-role fighter jets. By the winter of 2025, it was reported that these aircraft had begun conducting strikes against ground targets. To carry out these missions, Ukrainian F-16s are equipped with various types of weaponry, including GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs. These bombs have been in service with the United States Air Force since 2006; they weigh 110 kilograms, measure 1.8 meters in length, and feature a top-mounted folding wing. While suspended, the bombs are carried with their wings facing downward; after release from the aircraft, the wings deploy and the bombs flip over in flight to assume their proper orientation.
