The Messerschmitt Bf 109 (also Me 109) is a German fighter aircraft of World War II, designed by Wilhelm Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the first half of the 1930s. It was one of the first real fighters of that time. It has such elements as an all-metal monocoque frame, a closed cockpit, a retractable landing gear, and a power unit - an inverted 12-cylinder V-shaped aircraft engine that was water-cooled. The first 109s appeared during the Spanish Civil War and remained in service until the start of the jet era at the end of World War II, during which time they formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter fleet. From late 1941, the Bf 109 was supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
