The Heinkel He 219 was developed in the early 1940s at the request of the Luftwaffe to create a new night fighter that could effectively counter Allied bombers. Design began in 1940 under the direction of designer Richard Pflueger, and the first prototype flew in 1942.

The He 219 was arguably the Luftwaffe's finest night fighter of the Second World War and was notable for its outstanding debut mission in June 1943 when its prototype shot down five RAF Lancaster bombers. This set shows the final production version of the A-7, which was fitted with DB 603G engines for improved high altitude performance.
