Grumman's F9F "Panther" was the company's first fighter and second jet aircraft for the US Navy. He made his first flight in 1947. It is powered by a Pratt & Whitney J-42 engine, a licensed production version of the Rolls-Royce "Neon" turbojet engine. Because the fuel consumption of jet aircraft is relatively high, it is not possible to obtain the required range by relying only on fuel tanks in the wings and fuselage, so additional fuel tanks are added at the wing tips. F9F-2B: Bomb and missile racks were added under the wings, and all later F9F-2s had this modification, so the "B" designation was later dropped from the designation
