Perhaps the most famous fighter of World War II was the German Messerschmitt Bf 109.
In June 1941, a modification of the Bf 109F-4 appeared with a DB 601F engine, a 20-mm MG 151/20 cannon, and improved armor. The modification of the Bf 109F-4/B fighter-bomber could carry a bomb load of up to 250 kg.
In the spring of 1942, two Staffel of JG2 and JG26, armed with these aircraft, began raids on the English sea coast and attacks on British shipping in the English Channel. Bf 109F-4/B fighter-bombers were also used on the Soviet-German front with JG51 and JG54.
