The I-153 was the last and most advanced in the N. N. Polikarpov Design Bureau of the series of biplane fighters of the family. It had a gull-shaped upper wing, retractable undercarriage and more powerful armament with four ShKAS machine guns. Serial aircraft had M-62 radial engines, later series - more powerful M-63.

The first flight took place in August 1938. A total of 3,437 aircraft were produced in 1939-1941. In the summer of 1941, the I-153 "Seagull" formed the basis of the Soviet fighter aircraft with the I-16 fighters. I-153 were used in combat until the middle of 1943. Some of them were used on winter ski chassis.
