The IS-3M was a modernized IS-3, a parallel program for the IS-3M began in 1960 and included additional hull reinforcement, replacement of the 12.7 mm DShk machine gun with a DShKM, addition of a TVN-2 vision device for the driver, replacement of the engine V-54K-IS, installation of the Multicyclone air filter system and many other minor changes.
