The vehicles have a payload capacity of 9,100 kg or more (10 short tons, which is why the machine is called a 10-ton in American sources) and are available in various configurations, such as flatbed truck, material handling vehicle, tanker, tractor unit, transport-loader car, etc. Vehicle armor is supplied in the form of standardized mounted armor kits that can be installed if necessary.
It is part of the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) - a family of heavy tactical trucks that also includes HET and PLS systems. The US Marine Corps does not use HEMTT and PLS, using their LVSR counterpart.
