During World War II, the 10.5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18 and its modernized version 18M were the mainstay of German field artillery. Development began in 1928 at Rheinmetal. The howitzer was ready by 1930 and was called the "105 mm light howitzer arr. 1918", trying to pass it off as a product of the last year of World War I and hide the secret development of weapons prohibited by the Treaty of Versailles. Mass production began in 1935, and before that, over 4,000 were manufactured.
