A series of diesel-electric submarines of the PRC Navy. This type of boat is the first fully developed by Chinese engineers, as well as the first class of Chinese submarines with a drop-shaped hull. Designed to engage both surface and submarine warfare with torpedoes, these submarines are designed with a teardrop hull that significantly increases their underwater speed. Control and movement is provided by four rudders and one propeller. To reduce noise, the engine is mounted on shock absorbers, and the body is covered with rubber tiles. The design was not without flaws, which led to a long test time for the first ship.
