The Schnellboot S-38 belonged to a series of German fast torpedo boats used by the Kriegsmarine since 1940. Boats of this type were significantly larger than their Allied counterparts and had better seaworthiness. The 1942 model had reinforced wheelhouse armor and improved anti-aircraft weapons. The Schnellboot was used in the Baltic and North Seas, as well as in the English Channel and the Mediterranean Sea for attacks on Allied convoys, minelaying and reconnaissance.
