Built by the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Manche (Manche Shipyards) in Dieppe and commissioned in April 1975, this vessel was the second after Le Noroît in the Oceanographic Research and Support series of vessels. The Suroît made a positive contribution to the search for the wreck of the Titanic in the summer of 1985 with its tail sonar, a highly accurate detection tool.
