Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt" is a US fighter-bomber, developed in the early 1940s by the Republic Aviation company under the leadership of Georgian emigrant Alexander Kartveli. It was developed as a replacement for the Seversky P-35 aircraft. The P-47 "Thunderbolt" was the largest, heaviest and most expensive fighter of the US Army Air Forces with a piston internal combustion engine. It was one of the most common aircraft of World War II, in service with the US Air Force and the Allied air forces. It was supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease. It was nicknamed "Jug" (English: Jug).
