Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1/GR.3 and AV-8A Harrier (in the British and American designation systems, respectively) are the first generation of the British Harrier attack aircraft family. Developed in the 1960s, the Harrier became the world's first serial vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Serial production began in 1967. It was in service with Great Britain (Royal Air Force), the United States (Marines), Spain, India and Thailand.
Further developments of the aircraft are the BAE Sea Harrier, BAE Harrier II, and AV-8B Harrier II, which were created at British Aerospace (Great Britain) and McDonnell Douglas (USA).
