In the 1950s, the American company Northrop began developing a simple and economical fighter capable of equipping the flight units of many NATO countries. Born out of this specific need, the F-5 was essentially a lightweight single-seat fighter, small in size but extremely maneuverable. Easy to manufacture and relatively cheap, it was distinguished by high operational efficiency. The first versions produced by Northrop, called the F-5A "Freedom Fighter", were capable of reaching a maximum speed of 1,700 km/h thanks to two General Electric J85-GE-13 engines. Armed with two 20mm cannons.
