The Vought A-7 Corsair II was designed and built in the first half of the 1960s to respond to the request of the U.S. Navy to have a new carrier-based attack aircraft capable of replacing the piston-engined A-1 Skyraiders and A-4 Skyhawk jets. Directly developed from the airframe of the Vought F-8 Crusader carrier-based fighter, the first A-7 entered operational service in 1965. It was characterized by the large frontal air intake, the 35° swept wings with the tips folding and for the adoption of a modern Head-up Display which amplified operational efficiency.
