The Messerschmitt Bf 109 (also Me 109) is a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Wilhelm Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the first half of the 1930s. It was one of the first real fighters of that time. It has such elements as an all-metal monocoque frame, a closed cabin, a rigid chassis, a power unit - an inverted 12-cylinder V-shaped aircraft engine that had water cooling. The first 109s appeared during the Spanish Civil War and were in use until the beginning of the jet era at the end of World War II, during which time they were the backbone of the German Air Force's fighter fleet. From the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
