HMS Erebus is a Hekla-type bombardment ship designed by Sir Henry Peake of 715 tons displacement, armed with two 330 mm and 250 mm mortars, as well as ten guns. Built for the Royal Navy at the Pembroke shipyard (Wales) in 1826. The ship is named after the character of ancient Greek mythology, Erebus, and is intended for service in the Mediterranean Sea. After two years of service in the Mediterranean, "Erebus" was refitted for service in the Antarctic.
