On May 9, 1912, the first aircraft took off from a ship from the deck of HMS Hibernia. In July 1918, seven Sopwith Camel aircraft, launched from the converted cruiser HMS Furious, damaged the German air base at Tender and destroyed two zeppelins. The era of aircraft carriers had begun. In the interwar years, the Lexington, Akagi, and Courageous-class aircraft carriers were developed, but it was not until World War II that the aircraft carrier finally came into fashion. Aircraft carriers, which could carry 30-40 aircraft, allowed the Japanese and US navies to project air power across the Pacific, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor heralded a new kind of warfare. After hundreds of ships were sunk during World War II, including the German battleship Bismarck in 1941, aircraft carriers began to rule the waves at the end of the war, and the era of battleships was over.
