Serial production of the Japanese Type 89 medium tanks began in 1931. A year later, in 1932, it entered service with the Imperial Japanese Army and soon became its main tank. The crew consisted of 4 people. The armament consisted of a 57 mm Type 90 cannon and two 6.5 mm Type 91 machine guns. The final production version of the Type 89 tank, the "OTSU", became the world's first production tank with a diesel engine. Type 89 tanks of various modifications participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War, in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol against the Soviet Union and in World War II. It proved very effective against Chinese forces, but was already obsolete by the time of Khalkhin Gol and the battles with the Allies in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
