The KV heavy tank was designed and used as a heavy breakthrough tank. For a tank of such a task, the shortcomings of the L-11 main gun, which did not cope well with enemy bunkers and fortifications, could be fatal! Thus, along with tanks with 76.2 mm guns, a heavy tank with a much more powerful gun was created to better cope with its task. The first of this type uses a new large high 7-sided turret, on which a 152 mm M-10 howitzer is mounted. This version, which had many differences in detail from the later standard type, was usually called the KV "Big Tower" or KV-2 Model 1939.
