The Traction Avant, developed by André Lefebvre and Flaminio Bertoni in late 1933 and early 1934, was one of the most successful front-wheel drive cars of the 1930s. "Traction Avant" is French for front wheel drive, which literally means "front clutch". The car used an arc-welded monocoque (unitary body), whereas most other cars of the era were based on a separate frame (chassis) on which a non-structural body ('body') was built (the result is a lighter vehicle and is now used for almost all cars). It was produced from 1934 to 1957 in France, Belgium and Great Britain.
