In 1976, the FIA introduced a new Group 5 section for motorsport competitions, dedicated to "special" production cars. The new regulations allowed for a body width similar to that of normal production vehicles, but larger mud flaps could be used to benefit from the wider track and larger tires. BMW entered the Group 5 competition with a special edition of its new flagship E21 "320" model. A new airfoil was created, into which large wings were integrated, and a powerful 300 hp engine was installed. The car has been successfully used by the official BMW team and also as a platform for the development of young aspiring drivers.
