The Beetle was one of the icons of the 60s and the summer of love, which is really rather odd when you think about the origins of the original Beetle as a people's car or a Volkswagen for the Nazis before World War II. Millions were made after the war, and even after German production ended, they were still made in Mexico until relatively recently. When VW announced in 1997 that they had reimagined the Beetle on a Golf chassis, there was a lot of interest and many were bought despite it looking a little bulging. When it was redesigned again in 2011, it was a less "fun" new car, sleeker, more businesslike and more practical than its previous incarnation, taking design cues from VW's current lineup and incorporating them into its quirky lines.
