In the early 1980s, the US Marine Corps needed a new naval helicopter and considered the purchase of the McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache, but in 1981 Congress did not allocate funding for this. The Marine Corps then had to show interest in a more powerful version of the AH-1T. This version had an improved fire control system that used AIM-9 Sidewinder and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. Congress allocated funds for the purchase of this model. It received the designation AH-1W. A total of 179 AH-1Ws were produced, with another 45 helicopters upgraded from the AH-1T.
