Description
Unimog S 404
German military radio car
In addition to the standard cargo version, a variant of the vehicle with a van body (‘Koffer’) was quite common among the Unimog S army vehicles. Approximately 16,000 vehicles were equipped with these body styles and had the longest service life of any Unimog S series truck. Most of these vehicles were used as radio communication vehicles. They were easily distinguished by their characteristic hatches, antenna sockets on the roof and a large folding antenna on the rear wall of the body, which was manually deployed for operation and reached a height of 6 meters in the unfolded position. Internal equipment included various radios, such as the EM 25, SEM 25 or SEM 25. The paint job on the radio vehicles was standard for the Bundeswehr, at first the standard olive RAL 6014 color, which was gradually replaced in the 1980s by a three-color camouflage paint option. The car was popular in the Bundeswehr and was used by various units until the late 1990s.
