The history of the Karl self-propelled mortar began in 1935 with an order from Rheinmetall-Borzig for a 600 mm caliber mortar, which could fire projectiles weighing up to two tons at a distance of four thousand meters. Development began in March 1936. At the beginning of 1937 projects were presented. The design was carried out under the leadership of artillery general Karl Becker, so the vehicle, which had the factory index Gerät 040 (product 040), received the semi-official name “Karl”. An impressive mortar, weighing about 55 tons, threw two-ton shells at a distance of up to 3000 m.
