The Northrop F-5 was created in the 1960s to meet NATO's need for a cost-effective, easy-to-maintain multi-role fighter. In the early 1970s, the F-5E Tiger II was born. Powered by a pair of new J85-GE-21 engines, capable of providing significantly more power and thrust than the previous version, it featured a longer and wider fuselage. Improved flight characteristics achieved thanks to the new aerodynamic configuration, greater operational autonomy and updated avionics have allowed the Tiger II to be successfully used by numerous air forces. Basic armament consists of two 20 mm cannons mounted in the nose under the cockpit, and the ability to use various combinations of air-to-air missiles.
