T-55A was an improved version of the T-55 tank. It was distinguished by an increased level of anti-nuclear protection and the absence of a front-mounted machine gun. In 1963, the BTU-55 tank bulldozer was developed for installation on T-55 medium tanks. It differed from the BTU in greater productivity when breaking out trenches and shelters, lighter weight (1.44 tons) and a modified type of fastening.
