Originally designed to compete with the IS-3, the IS-4 (Object 245) was also an extensive upgrade of the IS-2. They lengthened the hull, added an additional set of road wheels and upgraded the engine.
Both the hull and the turret were reinforced with armor. Several alternative armaments were studied in paper studies, although the original IS-2 122 mm gun was ultimately retained.
An attempt was also made to use technical data obtained from the study of the wartime German Panzer V Panther tank, which influenced the layout of the IS-4 engine cooling system.
