Like the earlier BRDM-1, the BRDM-2 is a fully armored, four-wheel drive amphibious reconnaissance vehicle with two pairs of road wheels and a centralized tire pressure control system for off-road capability and one water jet for propulsion through water.
Outwardly, it differs from the BRDM in a larger box-shaped body.
It retained the boat bow of the BRDM, but the fighting compartment was moved further forward and the engine moved aft.
In the basic model, a small conical tower is mounted on the hull in the center above the support wheels.
There are two front domes and viewing blocks are centrally located on both sides.
The engine is larger than the BRDM (140 hp V-8 rather than 90 hp 6-cylinder).
