Leopard 2 (German: Leopard) is a German main tank.
The vehicle development program began in 1970; the first prototype was built in 1972; in 1976, the Leopard 2 AV prototype underwent comparative tests with the Abrams prototype at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in the USA; The first production Leopard 2 tank was delivered to the German army on October 25, 1979.
Leopard 2 represents a change in design philosophy and a step forward from the earlier Leopard. Having undergone a number of improvements since its inception, the Leopard 2 in various configurations is in service with 19 armies around the world, many of which have developed their own modifications of the tank.
