BRDM-1 is an armored amphibious reconnaissance vehicle used in Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union. It was originally known simply as the BRDM, but when the BRDM-2 entered production and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1962, it was given the designation BRDM-1. The BRDM (aka BTR-40P) first appeared in 1957 and was produced until 1966. In total, about 10,000 vehicles were produced, less than 600 remained in the reserves of a number of countries.
