In 1968, the US military needed to develop a lightweight howitzer to replace the 155 mm M114 howitzer during World War II. Against this background, the M198 155 mm towed howitzer was developed. In 1969, Rock Island Arsenal built a prototype gun for testing. Firepower tests began in 1970, and two prototypes of the M198 howitzer were delivered to the troops in 1972. After passing additional tests, the M198 howitzer was put into production in 1978. In April 1979, the first unit equipped with the M198 howitzer was officially formed. More than 1,600 units of the M198 were produced since production began, with the last rifle rolling off the assembly line at Rock Island Arsenal in 1992.
