The Chinese Navy's Type 33G missile submarine was developed from the Russian ROMEO-class submarine at Wuchang Shipyard in 1980 and launched in 1983. The Type 33G entered service in 1985 and was successfully tested by the Navy. This first-generation Chinese missile submarine is armed with six S801 anti-ship missiles and 8,533 mm torpedo tubes, sometimes carrying up to 20 sea mines instead of a torpedo.
