The Macchi MB-326 was developed in the 1950s to equip training units of the Italian Air Force. The first examples of the new Macchi two-seat low-wing trainer were delivered in 1961 and immediately proved to be an excellent aircraft in terms of flight and operational characteristics. Easily recognizable by the two air intakes at the roots of the wings, it was powered by an English Bristol Siddeley Viper jet engine. The MB-326 was intended for the Italian Air Force's jet pilot training program and played this important role for many years before being replaced by the more modern MB-339.
