The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter produced by Grumman during World War II. Designed to replace the previous version of the F4F Wildcat fighter and counter the Japanese A6M Zero. The aircraft was the dominant carrier-based fighter of the US Navy in the second part of the war in the Pacific, surpassing the faster F4U Corsair, which, however, had problems landing on an aircraft carrier. The F6F made its combat debut in September 1943 and soon became the most famous aircraft, thanks to its reputation as a reliable, well-designed naval fighter that was able to outmaneuver the A6M Zero and help dominate the air in the Pacific Theater of War.
