The Douglas A-1 Skyradier was designed as a next generation torpedo/bomber. After the plan was changed towards the end of the war, the Navy uses the Skyradier as its new ground attack aircraft for its outstanding performance in strike missions. The AD-4 is the largest production model in the Skyradiers family.
A new 2700 horsepower R-3350-26WA engine was installed and the windshield was reinforced to protect the pilot from bullets. A number of new equipment, such as two additional weapons, also used the R-1 autopilot, a new brake hook.
