Description
The S-300 is a Soviet and currently Russian anti-aircraft and ballistic missile defense system. Design work on this system likely began in 1967, but production did not begin until 1975 and likely continued intermittently until 2011. In the case of early versions of the S-300P system, the projectile (effector) is, for example, 5W55R, with a range of 75 kilometers, a maximum ceiling of 25,000 meters, and the mass of the warhead does not exceed 133 kilograms.
The S-300 is, in fact, a whole family of air and missile defense systems, which was developed by the Almaz-Antey plant, but often in close cooperation with other organizations, for example, ZAO Mekhanik im. Kalinin or Mariinsky Machine-Building Plant. Initially, the system was intended to destroy air targets and tactical missiles of the enemy, but over time it began to develop its capabilities to combat ballistic missiles.
