The Sea Hurricane, based on the famous Hawker fighter, was built for air cover of merchant convoys. Early versions were modified to be loaded and launched by catapult from specially modified armed merchant ships. With no lifting cranes, the only alternatives for the pilots were to land if autonomy permitted, or to make a forced water landing. Despite these operational limitations, the Sea Hurricanes achieved their first victories. Starting with the Mk Ib version, the Sea Hurricanes were modified with the addition of an arresting hook and began operating from aircraft carriers such as HMS Furious or HMS Eagle, as well as merchant vessels equipped with a flight deck and aircraft recovery and recovery facilities.
